Research Themes

The Energy Storage Consortium is an eclectic mixture of electrochemists, materials chemists, chemical engineers and electrical engineers. There are essentially two kinds of Consortium research: functional materials and device production.energypower

Functional materials research is devoted primarily to producing new nanostructured materials to improve the performance or capabilities of lithium ion batteries and electrochemical supercapacitors. Within this materials research there are a number of common themes. These include the production of new carbon materials and metal oxides for electrodes, materials modelling and device testing.

Device production is devoted to designing, modelling and producing devices suited to power grid interfacing and the automotive sector.

  • Battery/supercapacitor devices for automotive applications

The Energy Storage Consortium is a four-year project that commenced in early 2006. The work is planned to be carried out in two phases.

  1. 2006-2008: Materials development and the application of conventional, commercially available devices for grid and automotive applications.
  2. 2008-2010: Production of improved prototype devices to be tested on the Bath microgrid and the Strathclyde test car.
